Program Description

Research reveals that there is a large discrepancy between the size of the vocabulary of children from low-income and upper-income families. Vocabulary is closely related to a child’s success in school. Educators need to assist children in the early childhood years to develop the language and literacy skills that they need to be successful. The foundation for a child’s future success as a reader and writer is established in early childhood. Literacy and language skills also affect a child’s ability to learn in all areas of the curriculum.
How children with disabilities learn depends upon their relationship with their parents and teachers. This Language Based Learning Disabilities course provides help for parents, teachers, and caregivers by discussing how to foster positive relationships, how to accurately assess disabilities, and how to support children both at home and at school. This course covers how to have children assessed, how to support and form strong bonds with them, and the major language disabilities: dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. This course also explains how these children often struggle with auditory and visual processing skills, so you'll learn about information processing, memory, and sustaining their attention (we will also discuss ADHD).

For child care workers and teachers (or those studying to become child care workers and teachers) and parents who want to understand language, literacy, and language oriented learning disabilities and how to work with them.

• Define the communication-learning process
• Recall the symptoms of and typical interventions for most common language problems
• Recognize auditory processing disorders and the solutions
• Identify the cause of delayed development and various interventions
• Recognize types of language-based learning disabilities
• Identify how to correctly assess and support your child
• Understand aspects of memory, information processing, and attention deficits
• Describe how children with disabilities can navigate life outside of school and how they can gain independence
This class is an independent-study course. Students will have all the resources needed to successfully complete the course within the online material. A student helpdesk is available for technical support during the course enrollment.
This course generally takes students the full 1 months to complete.
